Kasthall is excited to announce Fasad, a collection of woven rugs created in collaboration with renowned British architect Sir David Chipperfield. With its intricate design and use of a new, sustainable material – recycled wool – Fasad is a rug that promises to add a new classic to Kasthall’s already storied collection.
The Fasad collection translates the solid, textured feel of brick into the soft, tactile world of woven rugs, merging architectural elements with the beloved warmth and comfort of wool. The design represents a natural progression from last year’s Tegel, the inaugural collaboration between the Pritzker Prize-winning architect and Kasthall. Following the tufted Tegel, both parties were eager to continue their creative journey, this time taking on the challenge of incorporating an entirely new material.
“Fasad is based on a concept of layering to create structure, both in terms of graphic and height,” says Dirk Gschwind, Managing Director of David Chipperfield Design. “We spent quite a few hours in the studio but also at the looms in Kinna to find the right balance for this structure. The challenge of using recycled wool yarn in a rug collection for the first time added another complexity to this exciting project, but together with Kasthall’s weavers and their handicraft skills, we finally managed it.”
Recycled wool – also known as post-consumer or regenerated wool – is crafted from pre-existing wool, which is transformed back into high-quality fibers. Compared to virgin wool, this sustainable alternative has a significantly reduced environmental impact. It can also be considered more ecological as it doesn’t require the extensive land use associated with traditional sheep grazing.
“We’re thrilled to be the first rug makers to use recycled wool in a collection. The design process for Fasad proved that the new yarn offers the characteristics that have made wool such a timeless, iconic material within many design disciplines as well as delivering real sustainability benefits,” says Mirkku Kullberg, CEO at Kasthall.
Calm, precise and harmonious, Fasad builds on the themes of architecture and renewal, featuring a warm, natural colour palette and lighter hints of linen in the weave. Enhancing the rug’s tactile feel, bouclé yarn creates a distinct yet subtle structure.
“Fasad is a special moment for Kasthall in many ways. We believe it occupies the space between nature’s gifts and our human imagination. Like all Kasthall rugs, we set out to create an object of beauty, but in the case of Fasad, its strong, subdued personality is given extra character by the concept of renewability. As well as being a collection that offers timeless, contemporary elegance, Fasad really feels like it’s right for these times,” says Kullberg.
