Italian furniture brand Pedrali introduces Griante, a refined new seating collection designed by CMP Design, unveiled at Salone del Mobile.Milano 2025. Inspired by the timeless charm of Lake Como, Griante reinterprets traditional woven seating with a modern design that merges artisanal craft with industrial efficiency.
'Griante is the name of a sun-kissed town overlooking Lake Como. Its toponym derives from the French word riant, which means smiley. Lake Como is our chosen backdrop: when we sit outside, we like to look out over the lake. This is how we like to imagine someone else sitting on Griante, experiencing the same pleasure that this lovely place gives us,' explain CMP Design.
The Griante collection encompasses a chair, armchair, and lounge chair, each offered in two distinct versions, one for indoor use, made from FSC®-certified ash wood, and one for outdoor settings, crafted from FSC®-certified teak. The latter marks Pedrali's first wooden chair designed specifically for outdoor use and celebrates the 20th anniversary of its Manzano factory in Udine, a centre for wood craftsmanship.
CMP Design emphasises the thoughtful selection of materials: 'When wood is used wisely, it can convey both lightness and structural solidity.'
At the heart of Griante's design lies its handwoven seat and backrest, crafted in Italy using a polypropylene yarn belt. This material ensures durability, weather resistance, and is fully recyclable. Designed for comfort, the belt features five distinct woven sections tailored to follow the human form, offering "enveloping ergonomics." Its three-dimensional texture and repeated square pattern geometry give the seat generous proportions and a welcoming appearance. The belt is available in five natural tones, drawing inspiration from landscapes.
'We deconstructed the woven chair to make it disassemblable, sustainable and easier to handle: this allows artisan quality to remain central, while making the process suitable for industrial production,' say the designers. This modular approach not only enhances sustainability but also streamlines logistics and assembly, embodying Pedrali's commitment to innovation.
Griante's attention to detail extends to the turned cylindrical legs, tapered oval armrests, and a supportive aluminium frame hidden within. This design sophistication ensures it fits naturally into various settings, whether shaded beneath a pergola, around a dining table, or in elegant restaurant terraces. The indoor ash version complements refined dining interiors, while the lounge models offer comfort and style for more relaxed, yet distinguished spaces.
Combining timeless design, comfort, and responsible craftsmanship, Griante stands as a celebration of Italian heritage and forward-looking design, woven with the spirit of Lake Como.
