Serene yet with a commanding aura, the Mikado chair by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby aims to impress not by its form but through its comfort. It offers a seating experience defined by upholstery on all sides as well as an ingeniously simple mechanism concealed beneath the seat that facilitates movement of the backrest. Mikado is suited for use around home dining tables, in restaurants or in meeting rooms and conceived with sustainability as its guiding principle: as the covers are not glued, they are removable to facilitate cleaning or replacement. The legs made of wood or recycled aluminium may also be individually replaced or exchanged for a different version. The inner seat panel is made of aluminium with a high recycled content, while the core of the backrest is produced from recycled plastic. Designed to enable the simple replacement of many of its components, Mikado has an especially long service life. Mikado is available as an armchair – with the subtle suggestion of armrests – or as a side chair. These two variants each offer a distinct seating experience, yet are very similar. This enables them to be used together without disturbing the visual harmony around a table or within a given space. The different leg variations, the two backs and a choice of fabric or leather covers in numerous colours ensure a wide range of possible combinations.
