Arper is changing the design world by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to sustainable innovation. This is highlighted by its reinvention of two classic designs: Aava 02 and Juno 02. Anchored in sustainability, Arper is creating a future where aesthetics, functionality, and eco-consciousness intersect seamlessly, a testament to the timeless beauty found in innovative transformations.
Aava 02, initially conceived by Antti Kotilainen, has undergone an evolution in its 2023 release. Arper, along with Kotilainen, embarked on a sustainability journey, incorporating post-consumer plastic into Aava 02's design. Predominantly derived from detergent bottles, this custom plastic gives Aava 02 a second life while contributing to a significant reduction in plastic waste.
The blend of post-consumer recycled polypropylene, reinforced with fiberglass, ensures a product that stands the test of time. Despite the use of recycled materials, Aava 02 retains Arper's signature high-quality finish and color. Each colorway contains a different percentage level of recycled material, with lighter colors starting at 5% and darker ones reaching up to 40%. This strategic use of recycled content not only helps to reduce plastic waste but also advances the cause of a truly circular economy.
In Kotilainen's words, "The objective of my work as a designer is always to create lasting, flexible products. Aava 02 is designed both for homes and public spaces. Its shape adapts easily to modern as well as traditional environments, and its variations satisfy many kinds of user groups and their needs." It's clear that Aava 02 represents more than just a chair – it's a testament to Arper's and Kotilainen's shared commitment to flexible, sustainable design.
Similarly, the redesign of the Juno 02 in 2022 is an example of Arper's innovative approach to sustainable design. In collaboration with Studio Irvine, Arper undertook a mission to improve upon an already successful chair. Made from 70% post-industrial recycled plastic, Juno 02 is a reimagination of a classic, with the same sleek silhouette and strength but requiring less material than ever to produce.
Marialaura Rossiello Irvine of Studio Irvine emphasizes the role of the designer in driving sustainable change, saying, “It’s the responsibility of the designer to create a product that can live for a long time. For that reason, it’s important to continue to improve what you’ve already designed, in addition to developing new products." She further explains, "This could mean modifying the form, the materials, or the colors to remain relevant for different applications, and to reflect new advancements in materials and technology." Juno 02 is a clear demonstration of this ethos, showing how a successful design can be revitalized to cater to a more sustainable future.
Aava 02 and Juno 02’s reimaginations contribute to a larger narrative of mindful design: that classic designs can evolve to meet the demands of a modern, eco-conscious consumer, and that sustainability and timeless aesthetics can go hand in hand. As Arper continues to lead the furniture industry, one can only anticipate what future transformations the brand will bring to the table.
