Tonda is the new suspension lamp created by Ferruccio Laviani, which plays with the force of gravity: it surprises and fascinates with the dynamic equilibrium between the spherical light source and its support. With sinuous geometric lines, Tonda comes from the present but reminds us of the past. An elegant reinterpretation of Italian design experiences across the 1960s and 1970s.
The result of a new collaboration with Ferruccio Laviani, Tonda is a dynamic lamp whose essence plays with barycentre and balance. It is sophisticated and discreet in character, with a clear reference to the 1970s, but without rhetoric and without losing its contemporary spirit.The charm of the design is based precisely on the force of gravity and the barycentric poise of the lamp: its way of being in eternal balance, provided by the central attachment of the support, manages to transmit a sense of lightness, harmony and simplicity – concepts that have become the spontaneous foundations of the designer’s thinking.
The name is simple but extremely evocative, suggesting a timeless creation, familiar but unique. Tonda comes to life as a new classic, as suggested by the designer himself:
“When I was a boy – and I never would have imagined I could have this job – I was fascinated by magazines like Ottagono and Abitare, where through an intelligent, visionary selection of furnishings I could discover marvelous things. When I began to think about Tonda for Foscarini I imagined a lamp that would remind me of those times, that taste, that atmosphere, those houses. I wanted to make a product halfway between the Radical Design of the early 1970s and so-called Good Design, which in spite of the references would be timeless, over and above passing fashions.”
Making its debut at the FuoriSalone 2022, Tonda stands out for its sinuous, geometric metal structure that embraces and welcomes the sphere of the diffuser in blown glass – without blocking it – with shading that shifts from opaline white to veiled transparency.
Available in two sizes, the lamp comes with a metal structure in white or orange.
