Turf Design Paints a Bigger Picture
Art, architecture and technology collide in Turf Design’s patent-pending Scanlines, a first-of-its-kind development for the market. Utilizing the company’s in-house engineering prowess and proprietary algorithm, the system allows for any image to be translated into an acoustic art form.
States Rob Perri, TURF CEO, “We know that architects and designers experience different issues when developing spaces—whether it’s a spatial, visual, or acoustics problem. TURF works to build systems that solve all of these simultaneously—in a literal sense, Scanlines reveals the art of acoustics and our drive to create unparalleled solutions. The panels offer amazing visuals while absorbing unwanted noise and increasing the overall perceived space of the room.”
TURF’s system processes a provided image through an algorithm, which translates the intensity of that image's color shades— from black to white— into depth. Carefully considering contrast, shading and scale, these interpretations are used to cut TURF's acoustic PET felt at the appropriate depths to render the image into a multidimensional masterpiece with depth-defying sound absorption. Reducing echo and reverberation, Scanlines improves space with style.
“TURF is big on two things: creating systems that conform to the need of specifiers, and being able to articulate that need with flexibility,” stated Dustin Headley, TURF Director of Product Development. “We pursued the concept of Scanlines because it allows a two-dimensional image to merge with sound-absorbing technology and solve a problem that makes designers’ lives, and projects, more successful. Any time we can make a specifier’s work easier or inspire to think in a new way, we know we’ve done our job.”
Scanlines can start with just about any kind of image as an input, creating panels with a maximum height of 119”, width of 47.5”, and felt thickness of 12mm. Depending on field conditions and arrangement, the panel can reach an NRC value of 0.35.
Bringing their visions to reality, designers and architects can choose from any combination of 9mm and 3mm material. With 9mm PET felt boards, specifiers can customize their wall panel with an assortment of 30 stunning colors, ranging from neutral to bold. TURF has the ability to integrate 3mm PET fabric into the products through lamination, allowing for the usage of 12 unique colors. It’s critical to consider how colors will work together— the firm can assist specifiers throughout the process, with a number of pre-made color combinations that designers can select from.
