The Benefits of Biophilia with Sagegreenlife

With the importance of biophilia and incorporating mindful, natural elements into workplace design on the rise, Coalesse’s partnership with Sagegreenlife was a natural fit. The Chicago-based company is a leader in the design and manufacturing of interior and exterior living green walls that foster connections to nature in the places we live, work, and play. Through our partnership, we’re bringing new life to work, and reimagining the way people engage with nature through biophilia.

What is Biophilia?
It’s no secret that humans have an inherent attraction to the natural world. The acknowledgment of this led to a field of study called biophilia or biophilic design—design inspired by nature. The guiding principle behind the idea is that nature is essential for mental and physical wellbeing, and should be incorporated into the design. As researchers are discovering more and more about how these natural elements impact us, biophilia has become highly important for those looking to create workplaces that promote wellbeing.

Bringing Biophilia to the Workplace
We spoke with Nathan Beckner, lead designer at Sagegreenlife to hear more about what biophilia is, why it’s an essential element of workplace design, and what you can do to bring more green to your workspace.

Why are biophilic elements like green walls and live plants important to have in the workplace?

As human beings, we have an undeniable connection with nature. Having plants as biophilic design elements goes far beyond adding to the design aesthetic, it creates a healthier and more productive work environment.

What benefits do they provide to workers?

We now have numerous studies and data showing the positive benefits of plants in the workplace. From the physical functions of plants, such as air purification and sound abatement, to their psychological functions of improving our health and wellbeing, plants equal healthier and happier occupants. Studies show employees will have higher productivity, less absenteeism and more creativity when living plants are incorporated into the space.

How do different factors like shape, color, and feel affect how plants can make an environment feel?

Like any design element whether it be an art piece, mill work or furniture, plants help shape the design intent. For example, monstera deliciosa’s large scale, iconic leaves will add a bold tropical look to the space, while sansevieria will provide a clean, modern element with its graphic vertical growth.

What steps can remote employees take to add more biophilic elements to their work from home setting?

It’s simple for anyone to add biophilic elements. Even a small plant at your desk/work area will reward you with the benefits of living plants. To start, try some easy-care, low light plants for interiors like philodendron ‘Brazil’, sansevieria or zamioculas zamiofolia (ZZ plant). Don’t forget blooming plants! Phalaenopsis orchids and African violets can easily be grown inside and re-bloom for years. Also, share the experience, even a couple of philodendrons draping down a shelf behind you on your next video conference call will brighten people’s day!
